What is polished plaster?
Polished plaster, often called Venetian plaster, is a lime-based decorative plaster applied by hand in thin layers and burnished with a steel trowel. Each layer catches the light slightly differently, which gives the finished wall the depth and soft sheen of polished stone.
It is where Feature Finishes began. Plastering and decorative finishes have been our trade for over 20 years.
Why polished plaster never dates
Polished plaster is a centuries-old craft built on natural materials, so it sits comfortably in a Victorian terrace in Ilford, a period home in Brentwood or a new build in Chelmsford. Rather than following a trend, it adds quiet depth and light to a room, and it looks better with age as lime plaster continues to harden.
Which finish should you choose?
Highly polished Venetian plaster has a marble-like sheen and the most dramatic depth. Marmorino has a finer, stone-like texture and a softer sheen. Stucco is more mottled and matt, giving a calm, textured look. Each can be tinted to suit your scheme, from warm ivory to deep charcoal. We bring sample boards so you can see them in your own light.
Where polished plaster works best
At home, polished plaster is perfect for entrance hallways and stairwells, chimney breasts and media walls, bathrooms and bedroom feature walls. In business, it gives hotel and spa receptions, salons, restaurants and boardrooms an instantly premium feel.
Looking after polished plaster
Lime plaster is durable and small marks can usually be repaired locally without redoing the whole wall. In bathrooms we use a suitable system and protective sealer, and for walls inside a shower we may recommend microcement instead.
How much does Venetian plaster cost?
Venetian plaster is priced per square metre and depends on the wall area, the condition of the existing walls, the finish and polish level, and access. WhatsApp us a photo of the wall for an initial estimate, and we confirm a fixed price after a free survey anywhere in Essex or London.
