Microcement, Resin & Plastering FAQs
Straight answers on prices, preparation, aftercare and which finish suits your space.
General Questions
Should I choose microcement or resin flooring?
Choose microcement for a soft, hand-trowelled, mineral look that can run across floors and walls. Choose resin for a glossy, metallic or flake finish and maximum toughness, especially in garages and commercial spaces. We bring samples of both to the survey.
Do you work on homes and businesses?
Yes. We work for homeowners and for shops, salons, clinics, offices, restaurants and showrooms across Essex and London.
Which areas do you cover?
We are based in Romford and cover Essex and London, including Hornchurch, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Ilford and central London.
How do I get a price?
WhatsApp us photos with your postcode and rough size for an initial estimate, or request a free survey. We confirm a fixed written price after visiting.
Are you trained and accredited?
Yes. We are certified by Xtreme Polishing Systems on completion of their epoxy training course, have completed Ox Resin’s City & Guilds assured epoxy and metallics programme, and have over 20 years in plastering and finishes.
Microcement FAQs
What is microcement?
Microcement is a thin decorative cement coating, applied by hand in layers a few millimetres thick and sealed, to create a seamless finish on floors, walls, showers and stairs.
Can microcement go over tiles?
Often, yes. If the existing tiles are sound and well bonded, we fill the grout lines, prime and reinforce the surface and lay microcement over the top. Loose or hollow tiles need fixing or removing first, which we check at survey.
Is microcement waterproof and good for bathrooms?
Once sealed with the right system, microcement is water resistant and well suited to bathrooms, wet rooms and walk-in showers. The sealer is what protects it, so it is applied with care and maintained over time.
Does microcement work with underfloor heating?
Yes, with a suitable microcement system and the correct heating protocol. The heating is run and then switched off before application, and brought back up gradually afterwards, so the floor is not stressed.
How much does microcement cost per m²?
It depends on the size of the area, the condition of the existing floor, whether walls or showers are included and the finish you choose. Send us photos on WhatsApp for an initial estimate, and we confirm a fixed written price after a free survey.
How long does microcement take to install?
Microcement is built up in several thin coats that each need to dry, so most rooms take a few days from preparation to sealing. We confirm the timings for your project in your quote.
Does microcement crack?
A quality microcement system laid on a sound, stable, properly prepared base is very resistant to cracking. Most cracks come from movement in the floor underneath, which is why we survey and prepare every floor before we start.
How do I clean and maintain microcement?
Sweep regularly and mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals. Depending on wear, the sealer can be refreshed over the years to keep it protected.
Should I choose microcement or resin?
Choose microcement for a soft, matt, hand-made look that can run up walls and into showers. Choose resin for a glossy, metallic or flake finish and maximum toughness, especially in garages and commercial spaces. We bring samples of both.
Epoxy Resin Flooring FAQs
What is epoxy resin flooring?
Epoxy resin flooring is a liquid resin system bonded to a prepared concrete or screed base that cures into a seamless, hard-wearing floor. It comes in metallic, flake, quartz and solid colour finishes.
Can you have resin flooring in a house?
Yes. Resin is increasingly popular in kitchens, open-plan living spaces, hallways, utility rooms and garages, where a seamless, easy-to-clean and striking floor makes a real difference.
How much does resin flooring cost per m²?
It depends on the resin system, the preparation needed, any moisture in the base and the size of the floor. Send us photos on WhatsApp for an initial estimate, and we confirm a fixed written price after a free survey.
Is resin flooring slippery?
Gloss resin can be slippery when wet, so we specify satin finishes or add anti-slip aggregate in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and commercial areas where grip matters.
Can resin go over tiles?
For the strongest bond and a long-lasting floor, we usually lift existing tiles and grind the base before applying resin. We assess every floor at survey and explain the options.
How long does a resin floor take?
Preparation, base coats and topcoats usually take a few days depending on the system and size. Most floors take light foot traffic within a day or two of the final coat, with full cure over the following days. We confirm timings in your quote.
What is the difference between metallic and flake flooring?
Metallic epoxy uses metallic pigments in clear resin to create flowing, marble-like movement and a glossy statement finish. Flake flooring broadcasts coloured chips into the resin for texture, grip and a forgiving, speckled look that hides dust and wear.
Is resin good for garage floors?
Yes. A properly prepared resin system resists oil, spills and dust, is easy to clean and turns a garage into a showroom-style space. Flake systems are especially popular for garages.
How durable is resin flooring?
A well-prepared, professionally laid resin floor is extremely hard-wearing. Avoid dragging heavy furniture, use felt pads, and the topcoat can be refreshed in future if it ever needs it.
Metallic Epoxy Flooring FAQs
What is a metallic epoxy floor?
A decorative resin floor where metallic pigments are mixed into epoxy and manipulated by hand as it levels, creating a seamless, three-dimensional marble effect finished with a clear topcoat.
Is metallic epoxy suitable for homes?
Yes. It is popular in open-plan kitchens, living rooms, hallways and show garages, where a seamless, easy-to-clean statement floor makes a real difference.
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
It depends on the size, the preparation needed, any moisture in the base and the colourway. Send us photos on WhatsApp for an initial estimate, and we confirm a fixed written price after a free survey.
Can I choose the colours?
Yes. Popular choices include charcoal and gold, pearl and silver, smoke grey and bronze. We show you samples and talk through the effect before we pour.
Is a metallic floor slippery?
High gloss can be slippery when wet, so we can use a satin topcoat or add anti-slip aggregate where grip matters.
Will it look exactly like the samples?
The colours will match, but the pattern is created by hand on the day, so your floor will be unique. That is a big part of its appeal.
How long does it take?
Usually a few days including preparation, base coat, metallic coat and topcoat, with light foot traffic shortly after the final coat. We confirm timings in your quote.
Flake Flooring FAQs
What is flake flooring?
A resin system where coloured vinyl flakes are broadcast into a wet base coat and sealed with a clear topcoat, creating a seamless, speckled floor with natural grip.
Is flake flooring suitable for garages?
Yes. It is the most popular garage floor finish because it resists oil and tyres, hides dust and gives natural grip.
How much does flake flooring cost?
It depends on the size, slab condition, moisture and the blend you choose. WhatsApp us photos for an initial estimate, then we confirm a fixed price after a free survey.
Is flake flooring slippery?
The flakes give natural texture, and we can add anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat for extra grip.
Can I choose the flake colours?
Yes. Choose from standard blends or create a custom mix to suit your space. We bring samples to the survey.
How long does a flake floor last?
A properly prepared and topcoated flake floor is extremely hard-wearing, and the topcoat can be refreshed in future if needed.
Flake or metallic?
Flake is the practical choice for garages, gyms and busy floors. Metallic is the showpiece. Many clients choose flake for everyday spaces and metallic for statement rooms.
Quartz Flooring FAQs
What is quartz flooring?
A resin system with coloured quartz aggregates bound into epoxy and sealed, creating a hard-wearing, slip-resistant floor with a speckled stone look.
Is quartz flooring hygienic?
Yes. It is seamless, can be coved up the wall edge and is easy to clean, which is why it is used in clinics, dental surgeries and commercial kitchens.
Is quartz flooring slip resistant?
The quartz aggregate gives natural texture and grip, and the level of slip resistance can be specified to suit the space.
How much does quartz flooring cost?
It depends on the area, preparation, coving and blend. WhatsApp us photos for an initial estimate and we confirm a fixed price after a free survey.
Can quartz flooring be used at home?
Yes. It suits kitchens, utility rooms, bathrooms and hallways where you want a practical, natural-looking floor.
How long does it take to install?
Usually a few days including preparation, quartz build and sealing. For businesses we plan the work around opening hours wherever possible.
Resin Countertop FAQs
What is a resin countertop?
A worktop or island coated in decorative epoxy resin, often with metallic or marble-effect pigments, finished with a protective topcoat for a seamless, high-gloss surface.
Can resin go over my existing worktops?
Often, if they are sound and stable. Some surfaces need a new substrate first. We check at survey.
Are resin countertops heat resistant?
Resin can be marked by very hot pans, so always use trivets and boards, as you would with many worktop materials.
How much do resin countertops cost?
It depends on the size, shape, cut-outs and effect. WhatsApp us photos and measurements for an initial estimate.
Can you match my resin floor?
Yes. Coordinating worktops and floors in the same colourway is one of the most popular options.
Resin Garage Floor FAQs
What is the best flooring for a garage?
For most homes, a properly prepared resin system is the best long-term garage floor. It seals the concrete, resists oil and spills, copes with tyres and is easy to clean. Flake finishes are the most popular because they add grip and hide dust.
How much does a resin garage floor cost?
It depends on the size of the garage, the condition of the slab, any moisture and the finish you choose. Send us photos on WhatsApp for an initial estimate, and we confirm a fixed written price after a free survey.
Is resin better than garage floor paint?
Yes, for durability. Paint sits on the surface and can peel under hot tyres and chemicals. A resin system is applied to ground, primed concrete, builds a thicker seamless layer and lasts far longer.
Will hot tyres damage a resin garage floor?
Hot tyre pick-up is usually a sign of a thin coating on poorly prepared concrete. We grind the slab and use systems suited to vehicles, which is what prevents it.
How long before I can park on it?
You can usually walk on the floor within a day or so of the topcoat, with vehicles allowed a few days later once the resin has fully cured. We confirm timings for your system.
Can you fix cracks and oil stains first?
Yes. Oil is degreased, the slab is diamond-ground and cracks and holes are repaired before any resin goes down. That preparation is what makes the floor last.
Is a resin garage floor slippery?
Flake finishes have natural texture, and we can add anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat for extra grip with wet shoes or tyres.
Flake or metallic for a garage?
Flake is the practical favourite: grippy, forgiving and great at hiding dust. Metallic is the showroom statement. Many clients choose metallic for show garages and flake for everyday ones.
Venetian Plastering FAQs
What is Venetian plaster?
Venetian plaster is a decorative lime-based plaster, often containing marble dust, applied by hand in thin layers and burnished to create a smooth finish with the depth and movement of polished stone.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster, marmorino and stucco?
They are all decorative lime plasters. Venetian or polished plaster is usually burnished to a sheen or high polish, marmorino has a finer stone-like texture with a softer sheen, and stucco tends to be more mottled and matt. We show you each on sample boards.
How much does Venetian plaster cost?
It depends on the wall area, the condition of the walls, the finish and polish level, and access. Send us photos on WhatsApp for an initial estimate, and we confirm a fixed written price after a free survey.
Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms?
Yes, with a suitable system and a protective sealer or wax. For walls that get direct water, such as inside a shower, we may suggest microcement or a specific waterproof plaster system instead.
How long does Venetian plaster last?
Lime-based plaster hardens over time and, looked after, lasts for many years. Small marks can often be repaired locally without redoing the whole wall.
How long does it take to apply?
Several thin layers are applied with drying time between each, so a feature wall usually takes a few days including preparation. We confirm timings in your quote.
Can it go over existing plaster or paint?
Usually, once the wall is sound, flat and properly primed. Cracks, wallpaper or loose paint are dealt with first, which we check at survey.
Do you do commercial Venetian plastering?
Yes. We finish receptions, salons, clinics, restaurants and showrooms, and plan the work around your opening hours wherever possible.
Plastering & Decorating FAQs
What is skimming?
Skimming is applying a thin coat of finishing plaster over existing walls or ceilings to create a smooth, flat surface ready for decorating. It is used to cover cracks, uneven plaster or textured finishes.
Can you plaster over artex?
Usually, yes. Artex is sealed with a bonding coat and skimmed flat. Artex applied before 2000 can contain asbestos, so we arrange a test first and only proceed once it is confirmed safe.
How much does it cost to skim a room?
It depends on the size of the room, whether walls and ceiling are included, the condition of the existing plaster and whether you want it decorated. Send photos on WhatsApp for an initial estimate.
How long does plaster take to dry before painting?
Fresh skim usually needs several days to dry, and longer in cold or damp weather. It changes from dark to an even light colour when dry, then gets a mist coat before painting.
Do you do painting and decorating as well?
Yes. We can skim and decorate as one job, so you are not waiting on or coordinating separate trades.
Is plastering messy?
There is always some dust, but we cover floors and furniture, protect the room and clean up at the end of each day.
Do you work on new extensions and renovations?
Yes. We plaster extensions, loft conversions and full refurbishments, and can finish floors and feature walls in the same project.
